Band Saws

A band saw is a machine tool that cuts workpieces using a continuous welded blade made from hardened steel. Primarily found as stationary industrial machines, band saws are also available in electric hand-held and bench-top versions commonly used in carpentry workshops. The defining advantage of a band saw is its high productivity – the continuous blade enables an uninterrupted cut. While most machines cut vertically, horizontal configurations are also widely used in industrial settings.

• Suitable for wood, metal, plastic, and concrete

• Used across small workshops and large-scale production facilities

The fundamental design of wood band saws has been established since the 19th century. A typical band saw – also known as a belt saw – consists of a continuous metal blade running on two wheels that rotate in the same plane. Deflection rollers at the top and bottom of the machine are enclosed by two protective hoods, with the saw blade guided over these rollers to enable a smooth, continuous cut.

The feed rollers, positioned on the machine table, are built to a more robust specification. Some band saw designs incorporate a sliding table to simplify guiding the workpiece towards the blade, while a tilting table allows diagonal cuts to be made. A mitre fence can also be added to the machine table, enabling precise angled cuts.

Access to the cutting area is intentionally restricted to prevent operator contact with the blade. This defined cutting zone also determines the maximum workpiece height that can be accommodated on the machine table, which is typically managed using adjustable stops.

The wood band saw is a versatile cutting tool used in small workshops, large-scale timber processing, and furniture production. While primarily associated with the woodworking industry, band saws are capable of cutting a wide range of materials — including metal, plastic, concrete, solid wood, and composite wooden workpieces.

Understanding the core performance parameters of a band saw – cutting speed, feed rate, and tooth positioning – is essential for achieving clean, efficient cuts. Cutting speed and feed rate must be carefully balanced: when these two variables work in harmony, the result is an optimal cut with minimal material stress. A coated saw blade can be used when a cooling lubricant is applied during the sawing process, helping to extend blade life and improve surface finish.

Band thickness is another critical factor that directly affects durability. Using a blade with incorrect dimensions significantly increases the risk of breakage. As a general rule, the blade thickness should equal 1/1000 of the deflection roller diameter – for example, a roller with a 500 mm diameter requires a blade thickness of 0.5 mm. Selecting the right blade dimensions for your specific machine ensures reliable performance and a longer service life.

A wide range of manufacturers has specialised in producing band saws and other woodworking machinery, with some of the most prominent names including ACM, FELDER, HEMA, MAKA, PANHANS, METABO, MAFELL, KIRCHNER, BAEUERLE, and MEBER.

Quality used band saws from these and other well-known manufacturers are regularly available on the second-hand market. Whether you are looking for a specific brand or a particular specification, the selection of used band saws on offer is frequently updated to reflect the latest availability.
